Finish sanding is one of those terms that means two different things depending on who is saying it. To a homeowner it means a palm sander, the small quarter-sheet tool sold as a finishing sander. To a cabinet shop or millwork plant it means something else entirely: the sanding stages that surround the coating process, and the machines that run them across hundreds of parts a shift without varying. This guide is about the second one.
The phrase covers several distinct operations, and shops that treat them as one step tend to have finish problems they cannot trace. In practice there are four:

Each stage has a different tolerance for error. Raw-wood work is forgiving. The two coated stages are not, because you are cutting a film that is only a few thousandths thick.
Most finish defects are traceable to inconsistency rather than technique. The first door of the shift gets a careful pass; the two hundredth gets whatever the operator has left. Hand sanding cannot hold a tolerance across a shift, and flat-platen machines cannot hold it across a profile. Both failure modes show up in the same place, on edges and profile crowns where pressure concentrates.
Flat stock is a solved problem: a wide belt sander handles it. The difficulty is everything else, raised panels, profiled rails, coves, beads, recessed centers and curved parts. A flat abrasive surface bridges the low spots on these and loads the high ones, which rounds crisp detail and burns through coatings.
Brush sanding solves this differently. Flexible flap wheels mounted on counter-rotating spindles bend into the low areas and lift off the high ones, so the cut stays even across the whole shape. For sample parts, repairs and short runs, the F-series pneumatic hand tools put the same flap wheel in a handheld tool with 2, 4 and 8 inch heads. This is the closest QuickWood equivalent to what most people mean by a finishing sander, though it works by flexible rotary brush rather than by orbital pad. A flap wheel sands with rotational speed rather than direct pressure, so the abrasive wears more slowly than a belt. Customer-reported figures from QuickWood installations put flap wheel life at 100 to 150 operating hours in a handheld tool and 3 to 6 months in an automatic machine, against roughly 50 hours maximum for a typical sanding belt. Actual life varies with material, grit and feed rate. Hubs are re-flappable, so worn abrasive is renewed with replacement flaps rather than discarding the wheel.
