Recessed Panel Sander: CNS Cabinet Door Machine

The recessed panel is the hardest square inch of a cabinet door to sand. The field is easy; the profile is manageable; but the inside corner where the center panel meets the frame — that shadow line — defeats flat pads entirely and eats hand-sanding hours in every door shop. A recessed panel sander exists for exactly that geometry: brush heads whose flexible abrasive reaches down into the recess and works the profile and panel edge that nothing flat can touch.

The CNS

The CNS is QuickWood's machine for this job: doors pass through, and the brush heads finish the recessed profile, the panel-to-frame transition and the raised detail in the same pass — the areas a wide-belt leaves untouched and a orbital can only approach by rounding over the very lines the door was built to show. It slots into a door line after machining for raw-wood sanding and between coats for sealer denibbing, the two stages where recess quality is won or lost.

Where it fits in a door line

A typical five-piece door line pairs machines by geometry: a door sanding machine for the assembled door's faces and profiles, the CNS concentrating on the recessed panel areas, and hand-held brush tools for the final inspection-bench touch. Shops running high door volume typically discover the CNS pays for itself in the sanding labor it removes from the worst square inches — the recess work that otherwise stays manual no matter what else is automated.

Raw wood and between coats

On raw doors, the target is uniform scratch pattern across field, profile and recess so stain takes evenly — blotchy recesses on stained doors are almost always a sanding-uniformity problem, not a stain problem. Between coats, the same geometry needs denibbing at fine grits without cutting through sealer on profile crowns; brush sanding's light tip-cutting is what makes that survivable at production speed.

Why do stained doors show blotchy recesses?

Because the recess was sanded differently than the field — usually less, and with torn rather than cut fibers. Uniform brush sanding across the whole door face is the fix, which is precisely the CNS's job.

Does the CNS replace the door sander?

No — they are partners. The door sanding machines own the overall door; the CNS specializes in the recessed panel geometry. Together they take a five-piece door from machining to finish-ready with hand work reduced to inspection touch-up.
