Search "cabinet sander" and every guide tells you the same thing: buy a random orbital. That advice is fine for refinishing one kitchen. It's wrong for anyone sanding cabinets for a living — and it's why the doors coming out of production shops feel better than DIY ones. Professional shops don't hand-sand raised panels with an orbital pad; they run brush sanding machines that sand the face, the profile and the inside edge of a cabinet door in one pass. For a single refinish, a random orbital handles the flat faces — but orbitals can't follow the profile of a raised-panel door, which is where refinishes go wrong. Two tools close that gap for under the cost of a good orbital: the drill-attached flap wheel, which chucks into your drill and conforms to routed profiles and panel raises, and sanding sponges for inside corners and detail work between coats. The sequence: degrease, orbital the flats at 120–150, flap-wheel the profiles, sponge the corners, then 220 before primer or stain.
